isaac…first, THANKS for setting this up. voting looks clean and simple…really nice to have an on-line form right in the post to make selections. while i think it’s fine that voters have the option to keep their ballot secret, i - for one - would like to see how the vote is going among those who are ok with their vote being tallied openly. my suggestion is to make on-line vote tallies open…those who want to keep their vote secret can email. also, the tally can be anonymous…i’d just like to see numbers. thoughts? l,j
To cast a vote for numbers 3-10, simply vote using the “Front design” fields (the bridge-filled-Wedin art is the same for all). I simply varied the text/fonts on the reverse to most appropriately complement each variety of front logo. If you like best one of the front logos in 3-10, but prefer the back design in number 1, then also use the “Back design” field to cast your vote. Very cold here. 2-degrees F. Love, C
we’ve all voted here on lake park…good diversity of preferences with only one choice showing up in the mix for all four of us. hard to tell if anyone else has voted yet, or not. if an “open” voting tabulation isn’t going to happen, we will publish our votes later this evening in a comment…we’ll include a “warning” in case anyone is concerned about being influenced by that. also, we voted only in the “front” category since the backs are all designed to work with the fronts (and the photo image is the same in all of them). if that throws the count off, let us know…or, simply carry the same front votes over to the back for us in the same order. l,j
There have been 18 first choices, but not everyone made 2nd and 3rd choices. The last three columns are weighted totals using 3 different weighting methods.
A summary if you’re getting dizzy from squinting at the table: 8 is the winner, using all of the proposed weighting methods.
isaac…thanks for the tally! fun to see how the various choices are faring. was there a consensus on scoring the votes to determine a winner? there was a suggestion that a 1st place vote equals 3 pts., 2nd = 2 pts., and a 3rd = 1 pt. that was in a post or comment and it seems fair to us. any thoughts on that?
also, i’ll offer a minor flaw in my selections that might result in splitting the vote on designs based on color. i voted for #3 as my first choice…i liked the black slightly more than the blue. but, color is secondary. same for #7, my second choice…went for design there and also on my third choice.
hopefully, there will be an overwhelming favorite and this will be a non-issue. but, if the scoring is close, we might want to look at at a run-off between the top two. or - ugh - not.
following is a re-cap of how we voted here today on the logos. isaac mentioned that voting in a comment was ok (versus using the voting menu in this post), so i figured a re-cap would be OK. please ignore if you do not want to see how we voted. numbers correspond to the logos in the order they were preferred, 1-2-3:
We barely have a signal here in ER, but want to vote. We are uncleaqr about the ethics making your first choice also your second and third choice, thus racking up more points?
Will await an opinion and may have to vote tomorrow if this connection quits on us. Do M + M get to vote? HA! Pete
pete…good question AND strategy. it’s not like we have many rules on voting, but my thought would be that you can only have one first choice. that’s just my opinion, though, and it’s really up to you. you can also make your first choice stronger by not voting for a second and third choice…that gives your first choice more weight (by not giving the other choices ANY weight). also, cheri and i thought it would have made more sense to score first choices with FOUR points instead of three…second choice would still be 2, and third 1. not to complicate this further, but you DO have another option here. let’s say your first choice is 7…or 8. the designs are identical. only difference is the color, so if you vote for both (1st and 2nd), you’re scoring more points for your favorite design. also, if we do not have a clear winner when voting closes, cheri was thinking we might have to add the totals of those combos. for example, 7 AND 8 have a total of 18 points right now. 3 and 4 have a combined total of 16. if those combos ended up in a tie, we might want to have a quick run-off between the two.
as for an M & M vote, in my opinion, if you guys can show these to the girls and and they can point to a favorite, i think they absolutely have a vote in this! of course, no cookie/candy coercion from grampa allowed!
my final thought here is that i LOVE all of the logos that are in contention right now. i’d be tickled with a tee shirt that sported any of them. lot of votes left to count, but i’m really liking the current crop of front-runners!
nuts week here, but maybe we can hook up for lunch or coffee if you’re in town. somehow, i committed to THREE video projects, and they’re all due in the next 2-3 months. ugh! more soon…love, jack
If I get a ballot with the same design for all 3 choices I’ll probably assume it’s a mistake and only count the first choice…
We can try calculating the results using a few different weighting schemes. As of this morning there’s a 2-way tie with either 321 or 421 weighting though…so how about 431 instead?
Are we sticking with the noon PST deadline for voting? It’d make more sense to me to allow voting until this evening, say 7pm PST - I won’t be counting until then anyway.
Hello to all! Fun to know everyone is out there pulling for their favorites . . .
I like the idea that EVERYONE gets to vote that wants to vote. The more the merrier.
Isaac, I’d say the 431 weighting scheme is a winner. Definitely need something that clearly distinguishes first choices from third choices. Extending the voting deadline also seems worthwhile. Would be nice to get the lines hooked up to reel in a few more voters. Love, C
Hello,
I have to relay some votes from the Eagle River crowd, they lost their connection and modem:
Pete: 8, 7, 3
Ben:8, 6, 7
Jessica: 3, 8, 7
Maddie: 5 - no 2nd or 3rd, Makenna: 7
they barely understood the first choice
Debra is 8 7 3
Sorry to have to do it this way - can we call them absentee votes?
more votes would be helpful, and that may break the tie here without requiring a new equation. i’m all for extending the deadline…whatever is needed. meanwhile, although 4-3-1 currently favors my first choice, i’m not a fan of going 4-3-1 instead of 4-2-1 if we’re simply juggling numbers to break the tie. but…i also know you guys have put a LOT of time and effort into this (a lot more than florida did in the 2000 election) AND i think both contenders are great. if we end up with a tie in a 4-2-1 count, i’d be ok with a coin toss. probably less controversial to leave it to chance, eh? l,j
I think they’re ALL technically absentee votes… Got your votes and added them to the summary table above. I’ll check for more votes around midnight EST and post the final results.
I received 3 more votes this evening, which brought the total number of voters to 18. The winner is…8! Luckily, all the proposed weighting schemes gave the same winner.
Isaac, and all of you that made this election work:
THANK YOU! As Jack said, any design would have made an awesome t-shirt or mug, but I look fwd to wearing #8 on a forest green beefy-T! I’m back on line and just barely made it to Debra’s birthday. Anyhow, Let us move on to other reunion ideas, such as, should we try to rent the garden club for Saturday, also? I was thinking it might be a cool place to rendezvous that day. Hey, it’s just about above freezing here tonight! Love, Pete
funny stuff, jon. also wanted to extend a big THANKS to mandi for getting this kicked off - and up and running - to start with! meanwhile, let us know what we can do to make the ordering process as easy as possible. gonna be a chore to get sizes/styles/colors from everyone, but probably a lot easier if we share the responsibility.
pete, as for renting the garden club on saturday, there’s a lot to recommend that: it’s fairly inexpensive and overlooks the prime rib/seafood place (with a nice path/stairwell to and from). also, if the weather’s bad (50-50 i’d say), it’d be nice to have a central place to gather. i think it’s a great idea!
LESS than two months to go! wow…that “year to go” sure went by in a flash. l, j/d/gp
Hey Mandi:
Guess it was about a month ago that you initiated this effort. We’ve gone through the holidays, a NEW YEAR, myriad birthdays, surgeries, and with all of that going on, a TEAM (with a few superstars) produced a t-shirt design that we can all be proud of. Thank you all for an awesome effort. We leave for Seattle in just 45 (that forty-five) days! See you soon. Love, Pete PS: Oh yeah, and by the way, it’s 30 degrees here and it actually broke 40 yesterday and we had some melting.
as you pointed out, pete, we started this LAST YEAR…it seemed like WAY longer than a month ago. i had to check, and mandi kicked it off on 12/7 with “Wanted…” amazing. the output of ideas, designs, and tweaks that sprang from there is amazing. the comment string on that first logo post kicked off with lisa’s “extra talk” concept…that certainly summed up the process from there! there were dozens of ideas and enhancements that came from all corners of the org, and thanks to our design team’s willingness to give everything a try, the process was an open collaboration that was truly evolutionary. jon’s plunge into the postcard zone, for example, got that initiative onto the drawing board…and peppered here and there were pieces of family history, like the “pepper, dad and gram” comment from priss. my FAVORITE part of the whole process were the many comments that expressed differing - and sometimes opposite - views on the ideas and designs. instead of being contentious, this diversity of ideas was expressed with mutual respect and appreciation. several times, i found my views changing after reviewing a comment and revisiting a design i had overlooked the first time through.
years from now when these tee shirts are threadbare and the colors faded, the memories of this effort - like the reunion itself - will be strong and colorful. just like our family. l, j/d/gp
Hey Jack:
Right on! AND when these are threadbare, I am hoping that there’ll be others with 2009, 10, 11 or however often we can stand each other! I would definitely say “save” all of those concepts for the next time around. I was looking through all of them this morning and really have some love for 3 and 5, but I was overcome by the oval….not sure why, but evidently, others liked it also. I hitch-hiked a ride to the Islands today in the guise of helping to trouble shoot a Yanmar problem and came away with two kings in our larder. Gramma Jean will finally get her steaks that I have been trying to acquire. If anyone heads for Anch from here soon, I’ll throw a chunk your way. Have a great weekend. I have two cats from Deeetroit going fishin’ tomorrow…should be fun. Love, Pete
hard to look past THIS reunion, but then again it HAS come together so nicely, i guess it’s not that far-fetched to think about future gatherings. in years past, seems like achieving a consensus on location was tough, and of course finding a time of year we were all open wasn’t easy, either. but we got over those humps pretty quickly on this one. as for the logos, the oval was my favorite for awhile and always in my top 3. if we’d gone another few days, i probably would have had a new favorite. they’re all good, and it sounds like everyone is pretty happy with the outcome. i’ve got several tee shirts with oval-themed logos…one from kauai and one from Napa Valley…they both look great! at the end there, i found myself favoring the simplicity of the bridge icon and name, but the oval does set those off nicely.
hey, way to go on the kings! was talking to kris (my neighbor with the super cub) yesterday…he’s already lamenting the deshka forecast, and he’s not optimsitic about the “hotspots” to the south. might be one of those years. time to pack it in…busy weekend ahead…l,j
