LOGO-A-GO-GO

DraftLogos1 4 1 DraftLogos5 8 1

Isaac has tee shirt production and estimated costs lined out, and also a sketch of the “bridge” idea. Cheri has roughed a few bridge-type sketches, too. (CG says: And here they are. These are just to get the discussion going. As you’ll note, I’ve pretty well stuck to the bridge idea. There are other very good ideas not illustrated here. It’s important to know that for these layouts, in a final design the bridge art would be rendered with brush strokes in a minimalist, fresh, organic fashion using india ink on watercolor paper. This bridge art is done using the computer for position only. I’ve also included some colors, for fun, and have numbered all the draft designs in order to assist our e-conversation.) With just over 2 months till the reunion, we’ll need to finalize designs soon to get tee shirts done. So, to help out here, I’m going to attempt to summarize current design ideas into this one post. If I miss any ideas (or, if you have a new idea), please include it in a comment, and I’ll edit the post to include the new design idea. Once we have all the ideas in one place, let’s vote asap and get these tee shirts (and mugs?) into production.

Speaking from experience, words are painfully inadequate sometimes to express visual concepts. Sometimes an idea doesn’t sound all that great until you SEE it. Ideally, it would be nice to have sketches – even rough ones – of some of these concepts. Absent sketches, we’ll just have to do our best to pre-visualize.

Last, based on recent comments, tee shirts could feature one or two designs (small B&W icon-type logo on front, with our without a large, 6 color montage or collage style image on back).
Here are – in no particular order – the ideas so far:

*A talk bubble with yada yada yada. Underneath could be “brought to you by the Wedin extra talk gene”.

*Talk bubble idea blended with ET (kid on bike silhouetted by moon) image.

*The Jean watercolor bridge idea. Or…do a lift from one of her previous pieces. This would look cool, AND be a pretty nice metaphor for the reunion.

*The Fisherman’s Memeorial in Homer would be another cool addition (as an element).

*Dad’s old cartoons from the Camp Carson era (as a stand-alone logo/icon or as an element in a larger design).

  • a W (in a cool font courtesy of Isaac) and 2008 (in an equally cool font courtesy of Isaac).
  • A white t-shirt with a Swedish flag on the front with Wedin and 2008 on the vertical axes. (ci #2)
  • Trite, but reliable – a white t-shirt with a Swedish family crest (ideally the Wedin family crest if anyone has that on hand). (ci #3)
  • As a Finn, I see a viking holding (read: claiming) the Wedin 2008 flag.
  • In honor of National Lampoon’s (which I am sure that the WFR08 will be nothing like), an hideous shirt with a collage of unflattering photos of family members. (ci #4)
  • A Swedish person once told me that wedin (pronounced vedeen) is the pluperfect conjugation of to go in Swedish. I have yet to confirm this as I do not speak Swedish and am mildly embarrassed about calling the House of Sweden with this particular question. Regardless, the logo idea is to have Wedin with a design that imparts movement, so wheels under the name or skid marks or something equally speedy.
  • Which gives me the great idea of House of sWedin. (I did warn you to avert your eyes.) (ci#5)
  • Think World Cup Soccer jersey – Wedin, 2008, and La Conner. (ci#6)
  • Think bid for the Olympics – Wedins in La Conner in 2008. (ci#7)
  • A hip, text-style … WFR08.
  • Postcard: Vintage postcard design. See “Open Concept…” post and other recent comments.
  • a picture of the Tokeland Hotel would be cool in the background too!!!

Isaac says: Here’s a bridge I painted on some watercolor paper:

And with some simple text:

Another one with Wedin above and La Conner 2008 below:

Here are some image files of the bridge for remixing – the tif should work in most any program but there are some jpgs just in case:

these logos are a nice addition to this post…a logo is worth a thousand words (or more). i almost missed cheri’s comments (in red) by clicking on “read more” under the logos on the main post (i neglected to do that on mandi’s original logo post and missed a lot…did the same thing at first on THIS one). also, after clicking on the logo thumbnails, i clicked on the enlarged image again…it enlarged to almost full screen (much easier to view). meanwhile, cheri mentioned “process” questions, and that process refers to the color process (not the printing process). maybe we can get a dialogue going on those issues, soon. l,j

Process color vs. spot color is what I’m talking about. If we do the postcard idea, we’ll need to do process color. It takes only four colors of ink, but the art and the printing are done with dots or “screens” overlapping to create the full color spectrum in color photos. My experience with t-shirt printing has been of the silkscreen variety, which works best with a spot color approach (like, for instance, the logo draft designs). I know there is much new printing technology though. I would be happy to help coordinate with the printer to determine how to prepare the art file, if it would be helpful. C

    Good Morning Everyone:
Well, here we go on the new adventure of 2008. We hope the very best for each and every one of you (and us!). We’ll be starting with one of my big goals of the year in March by getting together more often. Travel dollars have been tight, but the reunion promises a lot of bang for the buck, for sure. Thank you ALL for working on the logo graphics. There are some very nice ones in the two panels and for both Debra and I three pretty close contenders. We both really like #2, but #6 and #7 are definitely very cool, also. I could easily wear a shirt with any of them. Have a great day and a fantastic new year. Love, Pete

pete…thanks for the quick response and feedback. two of your and debra’s choices are in my top three picks, too! hopefully, more responses will come in over the next day or two, and we can nail something down by the weekend. also, regarding #6 (the one on the left), it seems like that would work in B&W if the ramped background went a bit lighter. i like that one a lot, but noted that it was not featured in a one-color presentation. if one of these evolves into the final selection, it has to work in one-color per the spec that isaac shared for the small (front-of-shirt) logo. one of these would also look great on a cup.

as for the one i like that isn’t in your top 3…#8 really stood out to me…it has a nice, bold masthead feel to me, and i like the way the bridge weaves into “WEDIN.”

isaac…nice bridge art! as cheri had mentioned, the natural brush strokes look much better than the computer-generated line art.

Anyone of them would be great. I am having trouble picking a favorite. I like 1, 4, 7(b&w) and 8 the best. If I had to narrow it down, 1 or 8. Maybe we could have a top three and one may seem to work better with the design of the back of the shirt.

    Nathan likes 4 & 8.
Marina likes 3 & 6 because they are blue.

Those are my thoughts for now.

  6. wedin54 says:

lisa…fun stuff. turns out nathan and sam both like #8 (a reverse of #4… nathan’s other choice). #8 was in my top 3, and your top 2. jake just weighed in with a preference for #8…he didn’t mention any also-rans. the feedback is really helpful…cheri is incorporating isaac’s bridge into some of the logos now…the one i saw was #2 and it was really cool. meanwhile, #2 was in my top 3, and a favorite of pete’s and debra’s, too. hopefully, more feedback will come in. partly based on marina’s penchant for blue, cheri tried a deep blue background on #8…it really enriched it, and also gave it a bit of a maritime feel. interesting how that works. looking forward to our lunch tomorrow! l,d

  7. isaac says:

I like 8 but am not sure about a(nother) black shirt. A blue background could make 8 work on shirt colors from black to white (except the particular shade of blue), which would be nice.

  8. cgillian says:

Isaac, the tif file works like a charm! Thanks. I didn’t use it in the “All things considered” iterations, because I’d figured out a way to kind of knock out the background in a weird little program I have for photo editing. But, the tif is nice and clean and really shows off the character of the brush work. It will work fabulously for a final. C
