Wanted: logo for the Wedin Family Reunion
Hello –
We have a friend who runs a printing business and he gave us the great idea of printing t-shirts for the Wedin Family Reunion 2008.
What the world needs now is the WFR08 logo. I think that it would be fun to have people post their ideas on the org and then the group can vote for their favorite logo.
Once we have the WFR08 logo, I will be asking people to send me how many t-shirts they would like and what sizes.
So, let the games begin…. may the best logo win. -mandi.
Update:
Hello –
Thank you, Lisa for the first logo idea, and as usual, an incredibly insightful logo idea. Jack, din seems so frighteningly appropriate.
I am concerned about the dearth of logo ideas from our historically prolific org posters. So, in honor of sharing information, with every weather report you must also post an idea for a WFR08 logo.
I will start off.
Hello from Washington, DC. You will not believe it, we have snow and it has lasted for 108 hours. As with the reliably variable weather in the mid-Atlantic, we will soon enjoy 60 degrees and rain and all of the snow will go the way of the 35 hour work week in France.
As penance for my weather report, my idea for the WFR08 logo is …
- a W (in a cool font courtesy of Isaac) and 2008 (in an equally cool font courtesy of Isaac). The caveat is that I want to differentiate this from “Hillary 2008″ since I would hate for La Conner to think that we are all sore losers over W not running and losing again in 2008. (copyright infringement #1)
Since I posted the initial request without a single logo idea, here are a few ideas. For those in the beloved WFR08 public with weak stomaches, please avert your eyes for the following grocery list.
- A white t-shirt with a Swedish flag on the front with Wedin and 2008 on the vertical axes. (ci #2)
- Trite, but reliable – a white t-shirt with a Swedish family crest (ideally the Wedin family crest if anyone has that on hand). (ci #3)
- As a Finn, I see a viking holding (read: claiming) the Wedin 2008 flag.
- In honor of National Lampoon’s (which I am sure that the WFR08 will be nothing like), an hideous shirt with a collage of unflattering photos of family members. (ci #4)
- A Swedish person once told me that wedin (pronounced vedeen) is the pluperfect conjugation of to go in Swedish. I have yet to confirm this as I do not speak Swedish and am mildly embarrassed about calling the House of Sweden with this particular question. Regardless, the logo idea is to have Wedin with a design that imparts movement, so wheels under the name or skid marks or something equally speedy.
- Which gives me the great idea of House of sWedin. (I did warn you to avert your eyes.) (ci#5)
- Think World Cup Soccer jersey – Wedin, 2008, and La Conner. (ci#6)
- Think bid for the Olympics – Wedins in La Conner in 2008. (ci#7)
- A little self-promotion never hurt me … wait for it … WFR08.
I am waiting with bated breath for up to the minute weather reports and logo ideas from all of you. -mandi.

I am thinking a talk bubble with yada yada yada. Underneath could be “brought to you by the Wedin extra talk gene”.
Nathan asked me the other day why I had to have the extra talk. I told him that he had it and some day it would activate. Watch out world.

lisa…i think “extra talk” is actually implied in our name. as you know, the definition of “din” is noise. Get a few Wedin’s together, and obviously, We…din
and yes on the logo idea…we’ve kinda joked about reunion mugs , ballcaps, etc., so yeah…let’s get serious and get a logo going…your idea is a good one to get the ball rolling, lisa! more soon…l, j/d/gp

Hey Mandi:
Great idea! We need to get cracking on this, probably. T-shirts will take some time. Put us down for one L and one XL. I’m not sure about Debra, but I’ll be glad to vote for entries….I am pretty much a stick-man illustrator. Maybe I could come up with a petroglygh-like logo, but we are probably looking for something more interesting. We spent part of the day at the Hyatt with the kids and enjoyed the myriad pools there. It poured rain for awhile and you had to duck into the pool to stay warm! All for now, am on reserve power, I just noticed. Love, Pete

pete…sounds like a fun day there in the pools…i’ll bet the girls had a blast. i’m curious, though…at the end of your comment, was that you on reserve power…or your laptop? big storm blowing through here, but we’re mostly in a “dry” corridor…we’re getting some wind, but the precip is mostly falling to the east and west of anchorage. weird. supposed to get some weather tomorrow, but it’s a tossup on whether we’ll get rain or snow…maybe a little of both. more soon…maybe we’ll see you before you head south…you guys get in tomorrow night, right? looks like you’ll have a nice tail-wind judging by the satellite. l,j

Hey Jack:
Good morning….we head back Tuesday afternoon and arrive in Anch about 11:30 PM. We are unsure if we are gonna just head home or get a nap, then maybe put Debra on a plane and I drive down Wednesday. We still have two full days here with Ben and Jess and girls, then one night on Oahu to ourselves. Funny, that is the one chance for some sunny weather. The rain has not dampened our enthusiasm, just altered our plans a bit. The pools at the Hyatt at pretty special and am glad that Ben and Jess were able to swing it. The girls came over last night for king salmon and Ben and Jess went out for pizza. I think we ALL had a good evening. We had a candle lit tea party. Not sure what’s on tap for today, but if includes swimming with the girls, it’ll be fun. They love the water. If I don’t see you in Anch, are you gonna make it down for a Homer shopping day this year? All for now. Pete PS: Also, sorry to use the comments as a default e-mail, but for now, it is the easiest.

Lisa, extra talk says ET to me, which has many delicious possibilities! (ci #8)

mandi/lisa…this is GREAT…long distance brainstorming at its best! i clicked on mandi’s ET link, and one “delicious possibility” struck immediately…mandi’s ET moon reconfigured a little into lisa’s “talk bubble”…then, possibly add a silhouetted group of “bikers” trailing behind the lead biker to represent the four generations who will be at the reunion…that could be subtle off to the left of the main image, but a fun way to show or imply the large, diverse group…we can talk about what goes into the “moon bubble” but maybe less is more…maybe we don’t put anything (or words) in there to imply that THAT’S what the reunion is all about…filling that void (space) with non-stop dialogue after all these years. best of all, this would be fairly fun and easy to pull off…a little photo-shop, a little design and artwork, some commemorative text. i’m not great at pre-visualizing things, but i can really see this and it would be pretty darn cool! l, j/d/gp

PETE…totally understand on the email trail. on some trips, my email works great…and on others, i can receive but not send. i don’t know WHAT that is, but i think it depends on which server i use to send. if i go with my local gci mailbox, it doesn’t work from remote locales…if i use my domain server (pair networks) it does work. maybe isaac could clear this up for us. meanwhile, isaac mentioned web mail. i have a hotmail account, but i rarely use it. i know that DOES work anywhere…it’s just that you go off the normal grid when you use it. yada-yada.
so…did you get my last email? i sent one with some random hyatt notes a few days ago, but wasn’t sure if you got it. i was thinking i’d email again if those are going through…if not, i’ll go with comments here as default email, too. i do that sometimes unconsciously, anyway…i’ll write a comment on the org, then realize it’s really more suitable for a one-to-one email. anyhow, let me know if you’re still receiving emails…if not, i’ll send another comment in answer to yours. meanwhile, sounds like you’re having BIG FUN there…we lucked out on weather for our trip, but i would gladly exchange that for the extra time you’ve had to really settle in and enjoy being there. i love that point where you transition – at least partly – from being a visitor to just BEING. have fun…maybe we’ll see you midweek. l, j

Hey All:
I think Mother Superior (Mandi) is coming down on all of us (with a ruler) because I recklessly used the logo post as an e-mail default and yes, I did provide some weather comments. Sorry! I am really lousy at conceptualizing logos and artistic creations, but I can offer up (I think) some of Dad’s old cartoons from the Camp Carson era. I am fairly certain there are some drawings up in the attic from then. Anyway, it’s just a kernel of an idea, but all of you creative-types out there think about “Camp Wedin”. I like the 2008 ideas, as they imply some kind of a repeat at some point. Mandi, I just couldn’t resist the MS moniker. Hope you are having a ball with the snow. We got a little here and the wind chill is well below zero. Am waiting for the trade winds to blow again….Love, Pete

pete…that’s a fun idea. i think i have some of those old cartoons archived somewhere, too…i’ll see what i can find that might work. there are some good ideas emerging. i like the blend of lisa’s and mandi’s concepts. cheri has a great concept, too. also, i was thinking it might be cool if jean could do simple watercolor brush-strokes of the la conner bridge for a logo…the reunion is, after all, a bridge in many ways. anyhow, i think we ought to settle come up with a deadline for ideas…otherwise, we could find ourselves still taking about concepts at the end of february
not sure anyone will have much time this month…mid january might be a good deadline for ideas, then maybe we can do an org-vote on our favorite. isaac, can you set up a section for that on the reunion page? of course, we’ll also have to make sure all the non-org reunion participants are in the loop on sharing ideas…maybe we can include a note on that in christmas calls/cards/visits.
logo on! l,j

MANDI…somehow, i MISSED the update on your post. i had originally seen the “read the rest of this entry”…but had no idea you’d added to it. in fact, i think that’s the first time i’ve seen that done on the org…or maybe i’ve missed a bunch of those. yikes. anyhow, i wasn’t sure where pete’s comment about your coming down on us came from. i re-checked comments and that didn’t shed any light, either. NOW – after reading the update – it all makes sense…fortunately, cheri found that update or i would probably still be in the dark. as an aside, is there a way to provide an alert or something when a continued post is updated?
meanwhile, a few thoughts/ideas:
*Collage: Not sure how many ideas we’ll have in the next few weeks, but we could combine them into a collage for the back of the tee shirt (large image)…then a simple/small icon for the front (upper left). This would work for all current logo ideas and a number of additional ideas.
*The Jean watercolor bridge idea. Or…do a lift from one of her previous pieces. This would look cool, AND be a pretty nice metaphor for the reunion. We could caption it, “Flammables not permitted”…as in, no bridge-burning allowed. Just kidding.
*Cheri has a very cool idea. It is based on those vintage city (and state) postcards with a panoramic backdrop, then the city or state is featured in large letters (often perspective style) that have individual pictures of key landmarks in each letter. In this case, we could have pictures of the regions we hail from…group people shots…homes…whatever anyone wanted to feature. if we went with a basic “WEDIN REUNION 2008″ that would allow 16 images/illustrations/paintings, etc. in the letters…that would pretty much cover all the families.
All for now. Have we shared this logo initiative with any of the non-orging family members? Probably ought to do that. I think I recall Priss and Deb talking about tee shirts (or logos) at one point early on, but maybe that was something else.
Anyhow, hope this helps…seems like we have some great ideas already…a deadline would really help, and let’s keep in mind that some of these ideas will take some time to execute. More soon. l, j/d/gp

Hey sounds like a lot of good ideas! I just saw Jean tonite and mentioned to her that some ideas were needed for a logo. She is having surgery on her shoulder (a tear in her ligament I believe) on Jan 2nd. It will be a 6week recovery. Anyway I really like the postcard idea too. I can take a picture of the sign as you enter Gold Bar. “The gateway to the Cascades”…for a small picture in the background. We are counting down the days here too!!! We will all be together Christmas Eve with the Christian side and then here with our kiddos on Christmas Day. Deb and I did our annual cookie baking day yesterday….Peter and Giselle were the helpers this year. There was cookie dough flying and lots of giggles. I have lots of good pics from Ericka’s…hopefully I can get that posted tomorrow…lots of running lately….but fun running!!!! For some reason my boss thinks I still need to be in the office sometimes!!!??? Take care, Love Priss

hey priss…fun stuff. i have two comments going at once right now. yikes. fun stuff in your comment here…hopefully we can decide on a design shortly after the holiday, and then get started on making it happen. thanks for sharing the logo idea with jean…if we end up using the bridge somewhere in the design, do you think she could do a very basic bridge painting (just simple brushstokes representing the bridge would do it…no detail required,,,just the bold outline shape would be cool)…dinnertime. just got back from the annual wedin-burpee ornament party…about 40 people there. big fun. l,j

Hey Jack….I didn’t see the idea of the bridge until after I saw Jean but hopefully will talk to her in the next few days anyway and will mention it to her. Not sure if she is going to be up to doing anything while she is in recovery…but maybe has something already? Will check that out. Seems like once January hits, the time is going to fly for the reunion huh??? So exciting! Did I tell you Danny and kelli confirmed for sure? Saw them at Ericka’s. Oh if Jean isn’t up for the bridge drawing maybe Charles would be. If he has a good picture he can draw anything…very talented.

priss…with the exception of jean’s lengthy recovery period, that all sounds great!
regarding the postcard logo concept, it’s been getting a lot of ink so far…mostly because it has a lot of pieces and parts and involves everyone’s participation. hopefully, we can get all the logo ideas together at some point (maybe after the holidays) and vote on favorites. it’s funny…i like the real simple ideas (“less is more”) and the real involved ideas (like the postcard concept)…and pretty much everything in between! ha.
on the bridge art, i THINK i’ve seen one of jean’s pieces that includes the bridge. maybe we can do a “lift” from that if it does exist. if not, it would be cool to just have a curved red brush stroke swoop in the shape of the bridge…doesn’t need to be too detailed…it would almost be better if it was symbolic rather than detailed and “perfect.:
that’s great news on danny and kelli. do they have accommodations lined up? there’s another event in la conner that weekend, so it might be tight for lodging in town (though should be easy to find places within a half hour of la conner).
gotta run more soon…l,j
