Wahine & Wahoo!
Wanted to post a few shots from TG evening, yesterday and this morning. We’re headed into Halewia this afternoon, so gotta get rolling. The game - billed as the biggest game in UH history - was everything we hoped it would be…close most of the game, but a big finish by Hawaii for a solid win. We’ll be pulling for WVU today…After LSU’s surprising loss yesterday, they have a good chance to move up to #1 if they can beat Connecticut. Drive careful on the way back today, Lisa. We’ll be back late Tuesday and probably see you on Wednesday! Love, D/J/GP

I made it back from Homer. We had a great trip. We hadn’t been down to Homer since July so it was good to make it down. We had a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. I burnt the crust on the legal pumkin pie but I should get it right next time. The filling tasted good. It sounds like you guys are having a great time in Hawaii. The cats are fine and the house looks good. It is wet and icy here, my least favorite winter weather. Hopefully it will cool down and snow again. Have a great trip. Love, Lisa

Hi All:
Lisa, glad to hear you made it….we sure did enjoy your visit and your kids are so easy to be around. Reading the books and giggling with Nathan and Marina was fun. Hope we were able to provide a bit of rest for you. Great to hear that the game in HI was good….don’t usually relate football to Hawaii, but what the heck, sounds like it was a bigee! We just checked Lihue temps and it was 73 degrees….a bit warm for me, but hopefully it cools at night. We are really getting anxious. Got much to do this week….am sure it will fly by. We are still not sure about how to get to Anch Friday, but will know soon. We did get reservations to Seattle on the 4th of March (late) and return on the 11th (early). Should be fun….we are hoping to squeeze in either Victoria or Tokeland into that schedule…more soon. Have a good trip home you guys and enjoy the rest of your stay. Love, Pete

lisa…thanks for the cat/house update. hmmm…maybe i should rephrase that. ha. talked to jon this morning…he called about the tail-light lense on the truck and i assured him that was me, not him. anyhow, he filled me in on the weather…said the snow was GONE. ugh. hard to believe.
pete…it’s 75 here on the north shore right now…they consider that a bit on the chilly side here. funny. kinda envy your anticipation…we still have a few days left, but it’s sure fun looking forward to! the island is still abuzz about the game. kansas just lost about an hour ago, so hawaii is now the ONLY undefeated top 20 team in the country. AND…west virginia should be #1 as of tomorrow…the #1 and #2 teams lost their games, and WVU won their game big. yada-yada.
yeah…seattle is getting close! we get there on the 5th (i think) and return on the 11th, too. hey, don’t forget those miles…we still owe you 20K…let’s do that soon, ok? gotta run…room service just got here. love, j/d/gp

We got our lights up. We are getting out Christmas boxes. We were wondering if you guys were planning on the trek to Palmer for a tree. We we thinking about it next Saturday afternoon. Have a nice flight back.
November 26th, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Hey elle belle! We’ll look forward to seeing your Christmas lights. There’s a lot of Christmas stuff up over here–but most of it looks very weird. We have seen a couple of houses all dressed up in lights that looked very pretty. But mostly it’s weird tinsel/fake snowflakes/reindeer, etc.
As for tree chopping, that sounds fun. Next Saturday may be a possibility . . . do you mean Saturday a week from this coming Saturday? Love, C
November 28th, 2007 at 11:12 am
lisa…still finding stray grains of sand in my hair, but i’ll second cheri’s comment…a palmer tree trip sounds GREAT! this coming saturday (12/1) is going to come fast. my guess is that we’ll still have a few items left to unpack and put away this weekend. so, saturday 12-8 would probably work better for us…that would still put us 2 1/2 weeks out till christmas for tree-trimming and such. let us know what works best for you guys. THANKS for looking in on the cats/mail/newspaper. other than being “needy” when we arrived, the feline contingent was in great shape when we arrived. l, d

It’s so fun to see all of your pictures! You guys look like your having so much fun!

sarah…i love to take pictures in hawaii…it seems like there’s a postcard waiting to be snapped in every direction. it’s one of the planet’s most intriguing and beautiful places, and we love it when we start feeling at home there after a few days. we talk about moving there almost every time we visit, but we also know that it’s so much more special because we only experience it every once in awhile. fun stuff. hugs around, l,j

Hey Jack:
Real quick….we are checking in on the org and e-mail here. Things are going great. The six of us have been spending lots of time together and we’re having a ball. I am almost used to the muggy heat, but this is just not my climate. Still have not done any swimming….just getting our bearings. Both ours and the kids condos are about perfect for what we are up to. We are doing some cooking and that has been fun having the kids over. There has been some rain and not alot of straight sun, but that’s okay with me. We’ll post a photo soon….we actually did a group shot up on the north shore today with big surf in the background. We go on our kayak trip tomorrow to the fern grotto. Hope Jess feels better and is up for it. See you all in about a week or so. Love, Pete
December 4th, 2007 at 8:50 am
hey pete…sounds like great fun…looking forward to the group pic. did you go all the way out to ke’e beach? there’s usually some good surf out there, and the napali coast trailhead is there, too…even the first couple miles of that is pretty spectacular. i saw an “extreme surf” warning for the north shores of kauai, oahu and maui…even a high surf warning for western shores. i’ll bet the backdrop for that group photo is pretty cool. the south side is the sunniest, but we had one stretch in poipu there a few years ago where it seemed like one squall after another marched in with brief stretches of sunshine in between…it’s their version of winter, i guess. been windy here and it turned cold the past few days (got below zero in parts of anchorage last night)…missing that kinda stuff always makes hawaii feel a little better. back to it here…we’ll look forward to a post when you get a chance. love, jack

ok, i’m NOT comment padding here, but i just noticed that isaac is now employing monkeys to moderate comments (see below adjacent to “submit comment”). i did check that out and it’s pretty amazing. for ONE thing, i learned that the spam filter has caught 10,000+ spam msgs since isaac installed it. wow. those are some pretty sharp monkeys! as for taking a turn at the monkey business, not sure how that works. isaac? j

Hey Jack (and Isaac, If you see this),
Yeah, there is some big surf and today they canceled our kayak trip. 50 knot winds and should be the same tomorrow. Still not bad weather…..way too warm for me, I’m afraid, but we are having fun. We have been cooking dinners here and Ben and Jess have been nice enough to join us. Today we did our own things and then converged on our kitchen for chicken and venison. We have fresh farmer’s market veggies and fruit and I gathered a coconut from the park next door and split it out with my Leatherman….it actually tasted good and reminded me of those tht Mom would bring home when we were kids. I have yet to go swimming, but still have another five days on Kauai to get wet and am thinking I’ll stay pretty dry onm our day in Honolulu. All for now, Isaac, if you talk to Bette, tell her I got her message and am working on the copper info. I tried to e-mail out, but had trouble, but can receive them and the org works fine. I’ll get Debra to figure it out.
Take care. Love, Pete

Watch out for the undertow and remember your floaties!
I’ll let Bette know you got her message - I talked to her last night and it sounded like she’s got her copper project in hand.
If you’re having trouble emailing out, you can always try webmail - webmail.captpete.com in your case. It’s not pretty but it is reliable. You might have to ask mom for your password…

pete…fun stuff. those farmer’s markets are great…there’s one in kapa’a (on the east side) we really liked when we stayed at lae nani. that one is a LOT like the one in homer, only island-style in terms of stuff. have you gone up waimea canyon this trip? it’s cooler up there as you get up into the higher elevations, and the canyon itself is pretty cool, too. when do ben and jess go to the hyatt? that’s a great place to go swimming (lots of choices), and i think the girls are big enough for their water-slide. although nothing like the river, they have free lagoon kayaking there, too. also, on the east side, lydgate park has a great kids play-park and a large, protected pool for kids swimming and snorkeling (which means it’s perfect for ME). it’s really mellow, and lots of exotic fish in there which are kinda fun. looking forward to pics when you have time…l,j

Jack, if you went to the the Comments tab you’re well on your way to becoming a trained monkey. When you look at the Comments tab there’s a “sub-tab” called Awaiting Moderation. A helpful monkey will approve, delete or spamitize any comments in there. In general, delete if it’s a duplicate, approve if it’s someone you recognize, and spamitize if it looks like spam. If in doubt, just leave the comment alone to let another monkey decide.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:30 am
hey…pass the bananas! meanwhile, do we get many comments these days that need moderation? i think all the regulars know to login before commenting now, and those auto-upload, right? and the spam filter seems to be fairly bulletproof (but maybe you’re manually dealing with some of that). also, as webmaster, do you get any kind of notification when there ARE comments that require moderation? i’d be happy to help with this, but it would help if i got a ping when there were comments that needed review. also, any thoughts on the U of Hawaii? jake really got caught up in it at that game…since they’re a UAA partner, he mentioned it as a possibility after he graduates. anyhow, just curious how that was for you and mandi. you guys seemed to have a pretty nice set-up when we visited you (wow, that was quite awhile ago, wasn’t it?)…anyhow, any thoughts on what that was like would be appreciated. the funny thing is, hawaii is just about as close as any out-of-state college there is. mahalo! l,j
December 5th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
There are probably a couple a week and they’re mostly spam. Most of the legit moderated comments have links in them. I think I’ve got it set to moderate comments with links no matter what, a sort of paranoid backup to the spam filter. I do get an email when a comment gets stuck, and I’m fairly reliable, but it’s nice to have a couple of regulars aware of the moderation area just in case. I could set up the admin emails to go to a couple of volunteers if that sounds interesting.
Mandi and I had a great time at UH-Manoa. Our housing situation was sorta iffy - I’d recommend the dorms, especially for a freshman. We only had bicycles to get around, which worked out surprisingly well. Looking back, of course I wish I’d had a scooter or motorcycle, but at the time I probably didn’t have the good sense to wear proper protective gear. The academic quality was comparable to UAF I think, with especially strong programs in Asia-oriented subjects. Some classes were hard to get into due to their popularity, mostly languages I think. What’s Jake thinking of studying?
December 5th, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Just for instance, when I checked out the comments tab a day or two ago–sometime after the promise of seeing monkeys when you log in was published on the org– there was a comment awaiting moderation regarding a new low price on the Paris Hilton sex tape . I figured everyone active on the org probably already had a copy,
so this monkey deleted it. Love, C
December 6th, 2007 at 10:03 am
wow. that’s a whole new slant on “active on the org.” yikes. meanwhile, i received an email this morning from a friend who wanted me to sign up on their birthday reminder web site. i checked it out, and it looked legit…also, i think it’s a great idea. so, could you take a look, isaac? the site is located at: http://www.birthdayalarm.com/ you send an email out to a group…they opt in by entering their birthday data and email. anyhow, i thought this might work for the org, too…be great to get reminders, eh? let me know if it looks skookum. last, YES…include me in the paris hilton…uh, i mean email moderation notices…i’d be happy to do that, and i’m on-line pretty much all day every weekday…glad to help out on that. and last, THANKS for the UH info. as for what jake is thinking about studying, it’s not for this week’s world history quiz
in other words, he’s not focused on any particular direction right now (and that’s hard to understand considering how focused and purposeful i was at 16
more soon. l,j
December 6th, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Focused and purposeful? You mean when Mom found you and your buddies in the basement studying? I can see there has been much monkey business going on since I’ve been away.
December 6th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
…or, as gram would have said, “monkeyshines.” hard to believe 16 for me was almost 43 years ago. yikes. l,j
December 7th, 2007 at 8:44 am
I see nothing obviously wrong with birthdayalarm. It’s entirely possible it’s a ploy to gather email addresses for spamming. Their “about” story sounds believable enough to me. The only problem I see is that you’d need to get people to sign up, which can be tough. Maybe I haven’t got it figured out, but I don’t see how to add birthday reminder without getting that person to join.
I’m lazily working on a sidebar module to show upcoming birthdays - it’s possible that’ll do the trick.
December 7th, 2007 at 9:47 am
isaac…the sidebar module sounds good! so, let’s avoid the possible phishing expedition, and hang tough. actually, if i spent a little time with iCal, i could do the birthday thing here and catch any that went a day over. meanwhile, it sure is great to have all this info in one place…it’s one of those great org perks. j
