Gotta Give it a Try!
Hey Everyone:
Since I got elected to the board of directors of the Alaska Marine Conservation Council last year, I have been elated to be involved with something positive. We have been members since the Council’s inception….in 1995, the Wedin Family joined AMCC and have enjoyed being kept informed of the various attacks on the Marine Environment that the Council provides. As a Board member, I am expected to sell raffle tickets! We have a cash raffle every Fall….350 $100 tickets are sold and 16 prizes from $250-$10,000 are awarded. It is one of the major fundraisers of the year. Kinda cool thing is, if you buy a ticket, they sign you up for a year of membership ($35 value). So, if any of you are interested in being involved and informed on whats being attacked on our marine environment, I would encourage you to buy a ticket or just check out the website and JOIN, at least! http://akmarine.org is the site. Isaac, if you can tell me how to make the mac do a hot-link, that would be cool. Love, Pete

PETE…we talked about the raffle on the way out to bear cove…only question i had was whether it was tax deductible. can you find out? if it is, i’ll do it through eye cue. if not, i’ll just enter direct. let me know how to cover it…check? cc? love, jack

There should be a toolbar above the posting area with a button labeled “link” - click that, type or paste in the URL (the http:// should already be there), hit “okay” and it’ll insert the start of your link. Then type or paste in a description, and finally hit the “link” button again to close the tag. It’s just HTML, so if you know that you can type in your own link.
In making this comment I noticed that if you type in something like http://wedin.org/ it’ll automatically get turned into a link. Maybe it looks uglier than linked descriptive words, but it seems pretty easy.

hey, you learn something every day! that’s pretty cool…i always type in the url (but not the http prefix)…the hot link is much easier all around. isaac…any interest in web projects these days? one is very simple…3-4 pages with content and most graphics provided…it will include one mpeg file (a movie trailer). anyhow, is that something you’d be interest in? and, if not, is there someone you’d recommend? l,j

If pete is still using safari vs firefox there is no toolbar. I was having problems posting with Lisa’s MAC until she downloaded firefox.
Sign us up for a raffle ticket.

jon…isaac turned me on to firefox a few months ago…best browser i’ve ever used (for MAC, anyway). safari - as the name implies - is a jungle of ineptitude…it’s one of the few mistakes MAC makes with their initial bundle. which brings me to another question for isaac…is there a way to apply MAC parental controls on other browsers besides safari? we’ve set that up on jake’s laptop, but have not been able to engage PC’s with firefox. j

Hey dad, you need a colon after the http for the linkage to happen.
There’s some information about Firefox and parental controls at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Parental_controls
To summarize, it doesn’t have any built-in parental controls but you can install scripts (which are easily disabled), or you can use some sort of web filtering software (possibly provided by your ISP).
I hope you don’t expect parental controls to actually work. In general, they block things they shouldn’t and are too easy to circumvent. Plus, they can’t do anything about those emails and IMs from Rep. Foley.

Hey Isaac, I added the colon, but no joy! I will consider changing to Firefox when I get back from my trip. For now, things work pretty well, but I do miss the hot-links. Getting excited about our trip….wish you guys were along the route, somewhere. Sure you don’t want to join us? I will go pick up the honey-cured squaw candy from Carl and the legal bear sausage tomorrow or the next day and send you some soon. Love, Dad

I figured out that it was only working for comments - apparently by design. Fortunately, someone wrote a plugin that makes it work for posts too, hence the magical appearance of the link in your post.
I’m pretty sure we enjoyed enough long distance driving for a while in Europe, but I am a little jealous. It’d be nice to make a leisurely Alcan drive sometime.

Wahoo! This is a good example of our org at work. By the way, because I am resigning as the secretary of ACA, I also dumped the forum from the site. It was collecting spam and no one was using it. Could have been great, but it needed bloggers to work. Yeah, the drive up should be fun. We bought a Garmin 330C GPS that talks to you like Gigi. That will be fun! Went up and saw Carl T and Seth today….picked up the legal squaw candy and bear sausage….all awesome! He gave me a piece of king lox that is, well, melt- in- your- mouth good. WSe’ll try to get a box off to you before heading out on our trip. Unfortunately, all of the king crab has disappeared. We’ll fix you up the best we can. Love, DAD
