HAPPY FORT OF JULY!
hope everyone had a great 4th! caught up with cheri, jake and sam in atlanta, and it sounds like they had a great day yesterday and another one on tap today! sure miss them…pretty darn lonely here without them.
had a nice visit from jon and lisa…nathan and marina helped a lot on the treefort project, and nathan stayed for an extra shift…every time i gave him a project, he was back 5 minutes later saying, “now what can i do grampa?” wow. he’s got a bright future with THAT work ethic.
am attaching a couple of progress update pics for jake and sam. we worked on the fort most of the day. every one of the boys asked today when you’d be back…something tells me i’ll be answering that question every day till the 18th! the fort will definitely be done by then. we added a porthole on one of the east walls today…looks great and adds some nice extra light. if you boys have any ideas or requests, just let me know. we have both sidewalls done now, and got the jackwall built on the south wall, so we can finish the roof next (before the weekend).
more soon. happy 4th of july, and lots of love, dad/grampa/j

Wow, that is quite the fort! Much nicer than the underground camps we built at 12549. Looks like a very cooperative crew you have there. The porthole (with Nathan) is very cool. A piece of lexan would cover that nicely. I’ll bet you could get a scrap from Cadilac Plastics. There is a special paint that you can put on the overlap that makes it look like a frame. You cut the glass about an inch larger than the hole, then hold it up there and scribe the opening, then paint the edge. That way the caulk doesn’t look tacky.
Sent a guy Joe’s way for a fly-out. Hope he has avails. It in mid August, I think. Any suggestions? Back to back fishing with the good weather. I’ll bet it is quiet around there….Take care. Love, Pete

pete…yeah, the fort has been a lot of fun, and the crew has been great…there’s no shortage of enthusiasm or willingness to pitch in…mostly, it’s a challenge to keep them all lined out. that porthole idea sounds good, but i already trimmed this one (we did it just after the pic was taken). i screwed the lexan to the wall on the inside, then trimmed the edge of the cut (on the outside) with 1/2″ rope. i was planning a simple box frame on the inside for paneling. i’m insulating at least part of the structure…not sure i’ll do the roof and floor, but the walls will be easy and keep the sound down as well as the heat in. ha.
joe’s been pretty swamped, but i’ll follow up next time i see him about the referral. back to it here, too. just finished a late lunch, and i’ve got a few chores before nathan’s soccer game tonight. glad the weather’s been good…the 4th was beautiful here, too! lisa mentioned you had like 4 straight days of full-boat bookings…pretty cool. more soon. l,j
