New image uploader
I’ve modified the image uploader so that it a) automatically resizes large images and b) automatically creates thumbnail images. For you it should still work exactly the same as before (please let me know right away if it doesn’t!). The code that’s added to your message now produces results like this:
Clicking the thumbnail opens the resized larger image.
Read on for more details and some questions.
I am so excited I got this to work! I didn’t like how the site’s been handling image uploads. I intentionally allowed large uploads in order to prevent frustration, but that resulted in large, design-breaking images on the site. A bunch of large images on the main page can also be really annoying for dial-up users (apparently there are still some out there). On top of that, large images take up a lot of space on the server. So, I’m hoping that this change fixes these problems.
The uploader works exactly the same as before, but now turns the uploaded image into two smaller versions: one that’s a max of 500 pixels wide or high, and one that’s a max of 75 pixels wide or high (a thumbnail). The original is then destroyed, so it’s not taking up space on the server. The uploader makes code for a thumbnail image, linked to the larger image and inserts it into your message.
You can still mess with the generated code to display the larger image in your message if you want. I could make this a lot easier if enough people want to do that.
What do you think about this change? Is it as great of an idea as I think it is? Are the thumbnails too small? How about the resized larger images?

Get that picture off of there. Can you make my photos of Jenny into thumbnails? I felt kind of bad that they turned out so big.
Love Mom
What’s wrong with it? I think it looks good. Also, I only accept requests to remove images by certified postal mail.
I gotta go with Isaac here. I think that’s a really nice photo…I saw it over on Isaac’s site this weekend, and thought it was great!
Nathan and I love that picture of Debra. He always wants me to click on it and the picture of Jenny with the octupus. Cool new feature.
We are having an animal filled fall. We are watching a friends gigantic dog for a week. A guy at Jon’s work is moving to Hawaii and gave Nathan a hamster and we may have parakeets coming too. Topping off all the new animals is a American Racing pigeon that the dogs cornered in the back yard. I found out from the band on its leg that it was hatched in 98 in Oklahoma. It is now nursing an injured wing in a dog kennel in the garage. We may soon be openning a petting zoo. Hopefully I will post pictures of our menagerie soon.
